Arte Sandía was founded in April of 2013. The name “Sandia” comes from the Spanish for watermelon which has all the colors of the Mexican flag and it is also the most painted fruit by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. At Arte Sandía you will find exclusive Mexican gifts made of blown glass, pewter, papier-mache and wood.
It also has an exclusive line of clothing items with the latest fashion trends made by Tzotzil and Tzeltal artisans that combine pre-Hispanic and contemporary techniques to achieve beautiful designs and an excellent quality. They are made of 100% cotton that has been worked in foot pedal looms of European origin where indigenous women create their own designs. Backstrap looms are also used, and they provide an intrinsic value to the clothing items because they have a unique seal printed in them, a result of a profound miscegenation.
